RYLA 2010-2011: Message from DG Jason Chan

DG Jason Chan at RYLA 2010-2011

Dear RYLArians,

I am very pleased to welcome you all to the 2010-2011 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). You are selected to participate in RYLA because of your outstanding leadership abilities and commitment to community service. RYLA will help you discover your potential and develop the skills you will need to become a leader in your community, career, and everyday life. Through the 4-day training camp, you will:

  • Develop your leadership skills and character;
  • Gain exposure to a variety of issues and people;
  • Meet active community leaders and Rotarians; and
  • Learn valuable information and career skills.

At the same time, you will have fun, build friendships, and create memories that will last a lifetime. The theme for this year's RYLA is “Build the Future and Bridge the Cultures”. Through the 4-day training camp, you will learn not only to build your future, but also the future of your local community. As you learn the skills of bridging different cultures, you will be able to build goodwill around the world as ambassadors of Rotary. In other words, you will be “Building Communities” “Bridging Continents”, which is the Rotary International (RI) theme for this year.

For your information, New Generations, previously known as Youth Service, has been officially approved by RI as the fifth Avenue of Service. RYLA is an important part of New Generations because we train our youth to become future leaders who are committed to community service and who will further the object of Rotary, which is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. To that end, I would like to sincerely thank all those who have volunteered their time and efforts to make this RYLA program fun, worthwhile and meaningful.

I therefore urge you all to actively participate in the activities and functions of this program so we can join hands to build communities and bridge continents!

Yours in Rotary,
Jason Chan,
District Governor 2010-2011
